This week we look at some of the ways churches and communities here in the Pacific Southwest celebrated MLK Day through service to others and thoughtful commemoration in worship services. We’ve also got details on an important ruling made this week by the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit on the case of two employees fired by Kellogg USA for failing to work on Sabbath. Throughout this last week, MLK Day celebrations provided an opportunity for service and reflection in our churches in the Pacific Southwest.
Churches and communities celebrated Dr. King’s legacy in worship services, and also through service to others.

The United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit has returned a favorable ruling in the case of two employees fired by Kellogg USA for failing to work on Sabbath. Richard Tabura and Guadalupe Diaz were both fired in 2012 from their manufacturing jobs at a Kellogg USA, Inc. plant in Utah for missing work on Saturdays as they honored their religious belief to observe Sabbath. On Wednesday of this week the Tenth Circuit US Court of Appeals in Denver, Colorado reversed the initial judgment for Kellogg’s, sending the case back to the lower court for trial.

One of the most important ways in which we engage with our communities is through Early Childhood Education and Care Centers. Recently, the Loma Linda Academy Children’s Center won the Best Preschool Award in The Press Enterprise’s 22nd Annual Best of Inland Empire Readers’ Choice Awards.
