Holbrook Indian School (HIS) created a unique delivery system for the two essential subjects—English and math. Many of their students experience high levels of trauma. Each traumatic experience further prevents students from learning at the same rate as their peers. When students arrive at HIS, the school immediately tests them to discover their reading and math levels.
“We want to make sure we know at what level they need to start in order to meet their needs,” says English teacher Anita Ojeda. “Unfortunately, many of our students have fallen behind academically, and their needs don’t necessarily match up with the teachers’ areas of expertise.”
As a high school English teacher, Ojeda doesn’t have expertise in helping students learn how to read.
“Therefore, we pair students who have trouble reading with the teacher who can best meet their needs,” says Ojeda. “The data from the test scores ensure we place students correctly.”
In addition, HIS implements programs in the arts. To find out more about this unique academic approach, click here.
