Students at Kohala Adventist School lovingly crafted Valentine’s cards for residents at our local senior living facility. With high hopes of brightening the lives of our local kupūna (elderly), our students put tremendous effort into creating their cards.
As their teacher, I was deeply touched. “Do you think they’ll feel the love I put in the card?” asked Wyatt, a first-grade student, upon completing his card. “I’m sure they will Wyatt. I can feel the love just holding it,” I assured him.
Students were challenged to take on the perspective of someone who rarely gets out and needs the outside world to come to them. “I would get so lonely and bored,” responded Lena in seventh grade. “Exactly!” I said, “Which is why what we are doing is so much more important than just making cards.”
Our students are beginning to grasp what it means to be active, contributing members of a community—and that in doing so, we come closer to knowing God’s heart of love for humanity. When I shared with the students that my grandma kept a card from a local Adventist school on her wall for over a year, the students were floored. “Does it really bring them that much happiness?” asked Theo in third grade. “That’s up to each individual person,” I replied, “but it sure doesn’t hurt to put good energy out there and pray that God uses it as an opportunity to help someone feel His love.”
As students created their cards, they chose a quote or poem to include, alongside a Bible text about God’s love for us.
Here is a sampling of the verses the students chose to include:
- “Do everything in love" (1 Corinthians 16:14, ICB).
- "So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love" (1 Corinthians 13:13, ESV).
- "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13, ESV).
- "The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end" (Lamentations 3:22, ESV).
- “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16, NIV).
- "The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love" (Psalm 103:8, ESV).
- "But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation" (Psalm 13:5, ESV).
- "I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you," (Jeremiah 31:3, ESV).
Valentine’s Day took on a new meaning for many students at Kohala Adventist School as they came to see it as an opportunity to share God’s everlasting love with those around them.

Los estudiantes de Kohala Adventist School elaboraron con cariño tarjetas de San Valentín para los residentes de nuestro asilo para personas mayores. Con grandes esperanzas de alegrar la vida de nuestros kupūna (ancianos), nuestros estudiantes hicieron un tremendo esfuerzo en la creación de sus tarjetas.
Como su maestra, me conmovió profundamente. «¿Cree que sentirán el amor que puse en la tarjeta?», preguntó Wyatt, un estudiante de primer grado, al completar su tarjeta. «Estoy seguro de que lo harán, Wyatt. Puedo sentir el amor con solo sostenerla», le aseguré.
Se desafió a los estudiantes a adoptar la perspectiva de alguien que rara vez sale y necesita que el mundo exterior se acerque a ellos. «Me sentiría tan sola y aburrida», respondió Lena en séptimo grado. «¡Exactamente!» Le dije: «Es por eso que lo que estamos haciendo es mucho más importante que solo hacer tarjetas».
Nuestros estudiantes están comenzando a comprender lo que significa ser miembros activos y contribuyentes de una comunidad y, que al hacerlo, nos acercamos más a conocer el amor de Dios por la humanidad. Cuando les conté a los estudiantes que mi abuela había tenido una tarjeta de una escuela adventista en su pared durante más de un año, los estudiantes se quedaron anonadados. «¿De verdad les da tanta felicidad?», preguntó Theo de tercer grado. «Eso depende de cada persona», respondí, «pero seguro que no está de más poner nuestra energía y orar para que Dios la use como una oportunidad para ayudar a alguien a sentir su amor».
A medida que los estudiantes creaban sus tarjetas, elegían una cita o un poema para incluir, junto con un texto bíblico sobre el amor de Dios.
Esta es una muestra de los versículos que los alumnos eligieron incluir:
- «Hagan todo con amor» (1 Corintios 16:14).
- «Así que ahora la fe, la esperanza y el amor permanecen, estos tres; pero el mayor de ellos es el amor» (1 Corintios 13:13).
- «Nadie tiene mayor amor que este, que uno ponga su vida por sus amigos» (Juan 15:13).
- «El amor inquebrantable del Señor nunca cesa; sus misericordias no se acaban nunca» (Lamentaciones 3:22).
- «Porque de tal manera amó Dios al mundo, que ha dado a su Hijo unigénito, para que todo aquel que en él cree, no se pierda, mas tenga vida eterna» (Juan 3:16).
- «El Señor es misericordioso y clemente, lento para la ira y abundante en misericordia» (Salmo 103:8).
- «Pero yo he confiado en tu misericordia; mi corazón se regocijará en tu salvación» (Salmo 13:5).
- «Con amor eterno te he amado; por tanto, te prolongué mi misericordia» (Jeremías 31:3).
El Día de San Valentín adquirió un nuevo significado para muchos estudiantes de Kohala Adventist School, ya que llegaron a verlo como una oportunidad para compartir el amor eterno de Dios con quienes los rodean.
