On Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023, the Kurtistown Samoan English church celebrated the payment of their debts with a mortgage burning ceremony. This ceremony occurred as the culmination of an evangelistic series held at the church earlier that week. Four people were baptized on the Sabbath following the evangelistic series. Mark Tamaleaa, pastor of the Kurtistown church and Hawaii Conference youth director, said that none of this would have been possible without the faithful giving and support of so many people. One of the conference’s intern ministry leaders, Alexander Rodriguez, serves at the Kurtistown Samoan English church. He helped coordinate the week's evangelistic series in preparation for the mortgage burning ceremony at the conclusion.
After such a high point for so many people in the community, it was only fitting that the church was able to celebrate the start of a new chapter of financial freedom with over 200 people in attendance from all across the islands, Washington, California, and even as far away as Alaska. In preparation for the potluck after the ceremony, members of the Kurtistown church gathered together to cook a meal using umu, the traditional Samoan method of cooking with hot rocks.

Worship music was performed by groups such as the Samoan Gospel Heralds, New Beginnings Samoan-English praise team, Honolulu Tongan SDA Youth, and Kapolei Samoan Tongan church. On Saturday, all these groups joined their voices together in one mass choir to praise God and celebrate. Attending as guest speakers for the event were Pastor Mark Tagaloa, Conference President Erik VanDenburgh, and Executive Secretary Jay Warren. There to celebrate along with them and the people at Kurtistown were the members of the Samoan Tokelau church.
“Samoa Tokelau church has supported and made major contributions to the Kurtistown church,” said Rodriguez. “That support was honored by having one of the Samoa Tokelau members and one of the Kurtistown members light the fire to burn the mortgage papers together. The Kurtistown Samoan English church has gone through lots of ups and downs, and this ceremony has provided a new hope to start growing in a good direction.”

El comienzo de un nuevo capítulo: ceremonia de quema de hipoteeca en la iglesia samoana de Kurtistown
El sábado 21 de octubre de 2023, la iglesia samoana de Kurtistown celebró el pago de sus deudas con una ceremonia de quema de hipotecas. Esa ceremonia ocurrió como la culminación de una serie evangelística que se llevó a cabo en la iglesia a principios de esa semana. Cuatro personas fueron bautizadas el sábado siguiente a la serie evangelística. Mark Tamaleaa, pastor de la iglesia de Kurtistown y director de jóvenes de la Hawaii Conference, dijo que nada de eso hubiese sido posible sin la entrega y el apoyo de tanta gente. Uno de los líderes del ministerio de la conferencia, Alexander Rodríguez, sirve en la iglesia samoana de Kurtistown. Ayudó a coordinar la serie evangelística de la semana en preparación para la ceremonia de quema de la hipoteca.

La música de adoración fue interpretada por grupos como los Heraldos del Evangelio de Samoa, el equipo de alabanza Samoano-Inglés de Nuevos Comienzos, la Juventud Adventista del Séptimo Día de Honolulu Tonga, y la Iglesia Kapolei Samoan Tonga. El sábado, todos esos grupos unieron sus voces en un coro masivo para alabar a Dios y celebrar. Asistieron como oradores invitados al evento el pastor Mark Tagaloa, el presidente de la conferencia Erik VanDentham y el secretario ejecutivo Jay Warren. Para celebrar con ellos y la gente de Kurtistown, estaban los miembros de la iglesia samoana de Tokelau.
«La iglesia de Samoa Tokelau ha apoyado y ha hecho importantes contribuciones a la iglesia de Kurtistown», dijo Rodríguez. «Ese apoyo fue honrado por el hecho de que uno de los miembros de Samoa Tokelau y uno de los miembros de Kurtistown encendieran el fuego para quemar los papeles de la hipoteca. La iglesia samoana de Kurtistown ha pasado por muchos altibajos, y esta ceremonia ha proporcionado una nueva esperanza para comenzar a crecer en una buena dirección».
