Do you remember the excitement you felt as the school year came to an end? Like most children, you were probably filled with anticipation for all the fun you were going to have during the long summer break. Or maybe you had plans to work, which kept you busy and out of trouble.
Imagine thinking about the arrival of summer with a sense of dread. Imagine being afraid of what might happen to you over the break, not having enough food in the house, or being in an unsafe environment.
Many of our students have suffered trauma, which is why we strive to offer opportunities to those who may not get a chance to experience many of the fun activities that other children have the privilege to engage in. It’s also an opportunity for them to maintain the momentum they have established during the school year.
Thanks to the support of many generous friends of HIS, we are able to offer several options to HIS students who choose to engage with Summer Experience. Activities include water parks, recreational trips to Flagstaff, baseball games, swimming at the local pool, attending camp meeting, various summer camps, and horseback riding. We also offer the option of staying on campus and the opportunity to participate in our student work program. Campus work includes caring for our horses and working on the grounds, in the development and business offices, and on the farm.
For the students who choose to stay home, another feature of Summer Experience is for several staff members to visit them regularly, help them run necessary errands, keep in contact with them via phone calls, and send care packages with items and/or supplies tailored to the students’ interests. The goal is to make sure the students are safe and let them know that they are on our minds even though they are not at school.
One of the most exciting moments during Summer Experience was Dalariyn’s decision to be baptized at camp meeting. This is what she had to say:
“We left school, and for two weeks, I was home. While I was at home, I actually kind of gave up on everything. I grew up without parents. I was always on my own and actually kind of raised my four younger siblings. Things got worse. I questioned, Why? If God was real, why is this happening to me? Why am I feeling like this? Really, being at home wasn’t good, so I decided to come back [to HIS] for the summer. Everything was good.… I went to camp meeting. It was my first time…but during the time there, what they were saying was very meaningful. It actually made sense. Their worship team was really good.… Melissa was talking about love and God’s love.… It was very reasonable and understandable when [she] and Pastor Manny were talking.… That night it felt like a lot of stuff was lifted off my shoulders. That’s when I decided I wanted to get baptized and wanted to give my life to God.”
Summer Experience begins on June 9 and runs through July 26. It is open to all of our students, grades one through 12. We are grateful for the support we continue to receive that helps provide this opportunity to experience a summer filled with fun activities the students may not have experienced before in a safe, nurturing environment.

De cara a cara al verano
¿Recuerdas la emoción que sentiste cuando el año escolar llegaba a su fin? Como la mayoría de los niños probablemente estabas lleno de anticipación por toda la diversión que ibas a tener durante las largas vacaciones de verano. O, tal vez, tenías planes de trabajar, lo que te mantendría ocupado y sin problemas.
Imagina pensar en la llegada del verano con una sensación de temor. Imagina tener temor de lo que pueda suceder durante las vacaciones, no tener suficiente comida en casa o estar en un entorno inseguro.
Muchos de nuestros estudiantes han sufrido traumas, por lo que nos esforzamos por ofrecer oportunidades a aquellos que no tienen la oportunidad de experimentar muchas de las actividades divertidas en las que otros niños tienen el privilegio de participar. También es una oportunidad para que mantengan el impulso que han establecido durante el año escolar.
Gracias al apoyo de muchos amigos generosos de HIS, podemos ofrecer varias opciones a los estudiantes que eligen participar en Summer Experience. Las actividades incluyen parques acuáticos, viajes recreativos a Flagstaff, juegos de béisbol, natación en la piscina, asistencia a un campestre, varios campamentos de verano y paseos a caballo. También ofrecemos la opción de permanecer en el campus y la oportunidad de participar en nuestro programa de trabajo estudiantil. El trabajo en el campus incluye el cuidado de nuestros caballos y el trabajo en los campos, en las oficinas de desarrollo y administración, y en la granja.
Para los estudiantes que eligen quedarse en casa, otra característica de Summer Experience es que varios miembros del personal les visitan regularmente, les ayudan a hacer los mandados necesarios, se mantienen en contacto con ellos a través de llamadas telefónicas y envían paquetes con artículos o suministros adaptados a los intereses de los estudiantes. El objetivo es asegurarnos de que los estudiantes estén seguros y hacerles saber que están en nuestras mentes aunque no estén en la escuela.
Uno de los momentos más emocionantes durante Summer Experience fue la decisión de Dalariyn de bautizarse en el campestre. Esto es lo que dijo:
«Salimos de la escuela y durante dos semanas estuve en casa. Mientras estaba en casa, en realidad me di por vencida del todo. Crecí sin padres. Siempre estuve sola y, de hecho, crie a mis cuatro hermanos menores. Las cosas empeoraron. Me preguntaba: ¿Por qué? Si Dios fuese real, ¿por qué me está sucediendo esto a mí? ¿Por qué me siento así? Realmente, estar en casa no era bueno, así que decidí volver [a HIS] para el verano. Todo estaba bien.... Fui al campestre. Era mi primera vez... Pero durante el tiempo que estuve ahí, lo que oía era muy significativo para mi. De hecho, todo tenía sentido. Su equipo de adoración era realmente agradable.... Melissa estaba hablando del amor y del amor de Dios hacia todos, incluso para mi... Era muy razonable y comprensible cuando [ella] y el pastor Manny estaban hablando... Esa noche sentí como si me quitasen muchas cosas de encima. Fue entonces cuando decidí que quería bautizarme y quería entregar mi vida a Dios».
La experiencia de verano comienza el 9 de junio y se extiende hasta el 26 de julio. Está abierto a todos nuestros estudiantes, desde el primero hasta el 12º grado. Estamos agradecidos por el apoyo que continuamos recibiendo que ayuda a brindar esa oportunidad de experimentar un verano lleno de actividades divertidas que los estudiantes pueden no haber experimentado antes en un entorno seguro y enriquecedor.
