Pastor Ben Williams has been serving the Kihei and Lahaina churches on Maui for about a year and a half. Living in Lahaina, he and his wife, Casey, are active in the local scene and motivated to encourage the people around them to develop a vital relationship with Jesus. In his first year of pastoring, Pastor Ben did what he could to gather people together. He recalled that “people came, and it was fun, but there was no ‘Oh, let’s do Bible studies or baptism,’ anything like that. I had it heavy on my heart that I wanted to do Bible studies with someone. And so I was praying that that would happen.” However, it seemed that as fast as opportunities came up, they fizzled. So, Pastor Ben kept praying.
One recent Sabbath, a young family attended the Lahaina church for the first time. Pastor Ben was intentional about visiting with them after the sermon. They shared a snippet of their background as they exited. He saw them again soon after and had a pleasant but similarly cursory exchange.
The third time the couple attended church, they finally shared the story of how they came to be there. The wife had been having dreams. In one particular dream, her family was in danger from negative influences. In the same dream, the word “shabbat” came up repeatedly as significant. She had to look it up to discover its connection to the Sabbath. Her research soon led her to the Adventist church. According to Pastor Ben, the wife insisted that “God is telling us that we should go to this church because it meant shabbat.” At the end of the story, the wife asked, “So, would you mind giving us Bible studies and baptizing us? And would you dedicate both of our children?”
God is telling us that we should go to this church because it meant shabbat.
Pastor Ben now meets regularly with the couple as they prepare for baptism. His aim is not only to plug them into church life but also to encourage their growth in a personal relationships with Jesus. He is impressed by their remarkably fervent Bible study.
This experience has taught Pastor Ben a valuable lesson for his future ministry. “I think as a pastor it can often feel like I need to figure out how to be innovative and attractive for these people then to come and receive Jesus,” he said. “But this is just another confirmation on the stack of confirmations that God wants to do something and we are more than welcome to participate. But we need to recognize that that’s what we’re doing. We’re participating with Him. I mean, the events didn’t work. What worked is God sent [the couple] a dream, and now they’re coming to church and being baptized.”
For this reason, let us continue to build events and connect with people, but, more importantly, let us stay in tune with the will of God through prayer.

Abierto a la participación con Dios
El pastor Ben Williams ha estado sirviendo a las iglesias de Kihei y Lahaina en Maui por aproximadamente un año y medio. La tercera vez que la pareja asistió a la iglesia, finalmente compartieron la historia de cómo empezaron a ir. La esposa había estado teniendo sueños. En uno en particular, su familia estaba en peligro de influencias negativas. En el mismo sueño, la palabra «shabat» surgió repetidamente como significativa. Tuvo que buscarlo para descubrir su conexión con el sábado. Su investigación pronto la llevó a la iglesia adventista. Según el pastor Ben, la esposa insistió que «Dios nos está diciendo que debemos ir a esta iglesia porque se identifica con shabat». Al final de la historia, la esposa preguntó: «¿sería posible que nos diese estudios bíblicos para ser bautizados? ¿Y dedicaría a nuestros dos hijos?»

El pastor Ben ahora se reúne regularmente con la pareja mientras se preparan para el bautismo. Su objetivo no es sólo conectarlos a la vida de la iglesia, sino también fomentar su crecimiento en una relación personal con Jesús. Le impresiona la forma ferviente como participan en el estudio bíblico.
Esa experiencia le ha enseñado al pastor Ben una valiosa lección para su futuro ministerio. «Creo que como pastor a menudo puedo sentir que necesito descubrir cómo ser innovador y llamativo para que esas personas reciban a Jesús», dijo. «Pero esa es solo otra confirmación de las muchas de que Dios quiere hacer algo y somos más que bienvenidos a participar. Pero tenemos que reconocer que eso es lo que estamos haciendo. Estamos participando con Jesús. Quiero decir, no es producto de la casualidad. Dios envió [a la pareja] un sueño, y ahora vienen a la iglesia y se bautizan».
Por esa razón, continuemos construyendo eventos y conectándonos con las personas, pero, lo que es más importante, mantengámonos en sintonía con la voluntad de Dios a través de la oración.
