What does it mean to belong? Have you ever asked yourself the questions Where do I belong? Where do I fit in? What does it mean to belong? One definition of belonging is being happy, comfortable, or having a good relationship with other members of a group because they welcome and accept you. At Monterey Bay Academy (MBA), we recognize that God has created within each one of us the desire to be part of a group or community of some sort—the desire to know that even with all our faults and foibles there is a group of people who are willing to take us in where we are safe, accepted, welcomed, and loved. This is a fundamental belief that drives much of what we do at MBA.
At the beginning of each new school year, students arrive at Monterey Bay Academy from all around the world—some returning to a school and experience they are already familiar with, but a surprisingly large number of students are coming to MBA for the first time. Still, each school year possesses elements of the unknown, and every student arrives with questions waiting to be answered, doubts and fears waiting to be quelled, hopes and expectations waiting to be realized. Along with all these thoughts and emotions is the deep need to belong.
The theme that was chosen for the 2023-24 school year at MBA is “You Belong.” It is based on Paul’s letter to the Ephesians in which he was trying to help the new Christ-followers feel a sense of community around their newfound belief in the Savior. Paul’s letter to them says this: “You are no longer outsiders and strangers. You are citizens together with God’s people. You are also members of God’s family” (Ephesians 2:19, NIRV).
There is nothing more important we will do as educators than help our students recognize they belong to the family of God. We count it a privilege to be the instruments that God uses to make this biblical promise become a reality for them. To be certain, academics are important, but it is only when we realize our worth in the eyes of Jesus that the knowledge, skills, and abilities He has blessed us with have meaning.
Here is an example from last school year: Mikela came to MBA as a senior from Poland with an interest in aviation. She enrolled in the Aviation Ground School class, not to learn how to fly but rather to gain a broader understanding of the aviation industry in order to prepare for a career as an aviation executive. At times, the fact that this experience was available within a Christian high school proved to be somewhat irritating and annoying for Mikela. She was frustrated with the religious services she was required to attend, and she voiced her displeasure to the principal and to her deans. As a staff, our prayer was that we might simply plant a seed and maybe someday Mikela would give her life to Jesus.
As the year progressed, Mikela’s attitude began to soften. She asked more questions about spiritual things and took more of an interest in her Basic Christianity class. Fast forward to the end of the school year. Our campus pastor had been studying with another student, Camila, who was to be baptized on graduation weekend. Just after the baccalaureate service ended on Sabbath morning, the church family gathered around an outdoor baptistry to watch Camila commit her life to Jesus. Then the unexpected happened. Mikela stepped to the side of the baptistry and asked the pastor if she too could be baptized. Mikela’s decision to commit her life to Jesus and become part of God’s family happened because she experienced a sense of belonging—because she was able to express doubts, ask hard questions, and know that she still had a place at MBA. The result is an even greater belonging, for now she has a home in God’s kingdom.
It is our mission as a faculty and staff to make sure each student feels they belong—not just to the MBA family but to the family of God. “You were bought at a price” (1 Corinthians 6:20, NIV). God accepts us just as we are. He welcomes us with open arms and loves us unconditionally because of the price paid at Calvary. He rescues us. We belong to Him alone, and we can believe, with confidence, that we are no longer outsiders and strangers but that we are now citizens together with God’s people and members of God’s family.

Una definición de pertenencia es estar feliz, cómodo o tener una buena relación con otros miembros de un grupo porque te dan la bienvenida y te aceptan. En Monterey Bay Academy (MBA), reconocemos que Dios ha creado dentro de cada uno de nosotros el deseo de ser parte de un grupo o comunidad de algún tipo, el deseo de saber que incluso con todas nuestras faltas y debilidades hay un grupo de personas que están dispuestas a llevarnos a un lugar donde estemos seguros, aceptados, acogidos y amados. Esa es una creencia fundamental que motiva gran parte de lo que hacemos en MBA.
Al comienzo de cada nuevo año escolar, los estudiantes llegan a Monterey Bay Academy de todo el mundo, algunos regresan a una escuela y experiencia con la que ya están familiarizados, pero un número sorprendentemente grande de estudiantes vienen a MBA por primera vez. Sin embargo, cada año escolar posee elementos de lo desconocido y cada estudiante llega con preguntas que esperan ser contestadas, dudas y temores que esperan ser sofocados, esperanzas y expectativas que esperan ser realizadas. Con todos esos pensamientos y emociones está la profunda necesidad de pertenecer.
El tema que se eligió para el año escolar 2023-24 en el MBA es «Perteneces». Se basa en la carta de Pablo a los Efesios en la que estaba tratando de ayudar a los nuevos seguidores de Cristo a sentir un sentido de comunidad en torno a su nueva creencia en el Salvador. La carta de Pablo a ellos dice esto: «Ya no son desconocidos ni extraños. Ustedes son ciudadanos junto con el pueblo de Dios. son también miembros de la familia de Dios» (Efesios 2:19).
No hay nada más importante que podemos hacer como educadores que ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a reconocer que pertenecen a la familia de Dios. Consideramos un privilegio ser los instrumentos que Dios usa para hacer que esa promesa bíblica se convierta en una realidad para ellos. Sin duda, lo académico es importante, pero es solo cuando nos damos cuenta de nuestro valor a los ojos de Jesús que el conocimiento, el talento y las habilidades con las que nos ha bendecido tienen significado.
Este es un ejemplo del año escolar pasado: Mikela llegó a MBA como estudiante de último año desde Polonia con interés en la aviación. Se inscribió en la clase de la Aviation Ground School, no para aprender a volar, sino para obtener una comprensión más amplia de la industria de la aviación con el fin de prepararse para una carrera como ejecutiva de aviación. A veces, el hecho de que esa experiencia estuviera disponible dentro de una high school cristiana resultó ser algo irritante y molesto para Mikela. Se sentía frustrada con los servicios religiosos a los que debía asistir y expresó su descontento al director y a sus preceptores. Como personal, nuestra oración era que simplemente pudiéramos plantar una semilla y tal vez algún día Mikela entregara su vida a Jesús.
A medida que avanzaba el año, la actitud de Mikela comenzó a suavizarse. Hizo más preguntas sobre cosas espirituales y se interesó más en su clase de Cristianismo Básico. Llega el final del año escolar. El pastor de nuestro campus había estado estudiando con otra estudiante, Camila, que iba a ser bautizada el fin de semana de graduación. Justo después de que terminara el servicio de bachillerato el sábado por la mañana, la familia de la iglesia se reunió alrededor de un bautisterio al aire libre para ver a Camila entregar su vida a Jesús. Entonces sucedió lo inesperado. Mikela se acercó al bautisterio y le preguntó al pastor si ella también podía ser bautizada. La decisión de Mikela de comprometer su vida con Jesús y convertirse en parte de la familia de Dios sucedió porque experimentó un sentido de pertenencia, porque pudo expresar dudas, hacer preguntas difíciles y saber que todavía tenía un lugar en MBA. El resultado es una pertenencia aún mayor, porque ahora tiene un hogar en el reino de Dios.
Es nuestra misión como facultad y personal asegurarnos de que cada estudiante sienta que pertenece, no solo a la familia de MBA, sino a la familia de Dios. «Han sido comprados por precio» (1 Corintios 6:20). Dios nos acepta tal como somos. Nos recibe con los brazos abiertos y nos ama incondicionalmente por el precio pagado en el Calvario. Nos rescata. Le pertenecemos solo a él y podemos creer, con confianza, que ya no somos desconocidos ni extraños, sino que ahora somos ciudadanos junto con el pueblo de Dios y miembros de la familia de Dios.
