Youth ministry has always been part of the DNA of Daniel Ortega’s ministry. As a young person, Ortega found his passion for ministry when his local church empowered him to get involved. “I was a very shy kid,” he shared, “but through the process of them empowering me and giving me opportunities to serve, I just got excited about ministry.”
Ortega was an active lay member and even served as the president of the Dallas Youth Federation, but he didn’t plan on full-time ministry. He had always wanted to be an architect. On a mission trip to Mexico in college, sitting in the audience listening to a friend give the message, he thought, “Man, I’d like to do that someday, but I would never dare because, you know, that’s just not me.” He would go on to work as an architecture designer for seven years.
The following year, the mission trip director asked him to speak. “How would he even think about me?” he wondered. But he went forward in faith. “As I look back, I remember probably some of the worst sermons people have ever heard. But when I made the call at the end of the week, 11 people came forward. When I saw that, I said, ‘Wow. God, I know that wasn’t me.’ I saw that that was the Holy Spirit working, and from that point forward, with the combination of my passion to serve the church, I felt like God was saying, ‘I have something else for you.’”
Soon after, he earned his degree in theology and served as a pastor for eight years in Oklahoma and three years in Indiana, two years of which he was also a principal. He then returned to Oklahoma to serve as youth director and communication director before moving to Oregon to serve as the family and children’s ministry director.
Now, Ortega is excited to join the Southern California Conference as youth ministries director. His ministry hinges on three things: leading young people to Christ, discipling them to be like Christ, and empowering them to serve for Christ. He looks forward to collaborating with local church leaders to provide meaningful programming for youth throughout the conference.
His personal philosophy centers on seeking the Holy Spirit. “I think it’s imperative that as a conference, as church leaders, and as parents, we are praying continually for the Holy Spirit upon our kids and our young people,” he said. “I can do the most amazing program in the world, but if the Holy Spirit is not there, did I really do a great program?”
“I think about people in my life when I was a young person who were a blessing to me and who were patient with me, who loved me, and I just want to reciprocate that,” he reflected. “I want to be able to find opportunities to serve them, encourage them, and inspire them.”

Daniel Ortega trae su pasión por el ministerio juvenil a la Southern California Conference
El pastorado juvenil siempre ha sido parte del ADN del ministerio de Daniel Ortega. Cuando era joven, Ortega encontró su pasión por el ministerio cuando su iglesia lo empoderó para involucrarse. «Era un niño muy tímido», compartió, «pero a través del proceso de empoderarme y darme oportunidades para servir, simplemente me entusiasmé con el ministerio».
Ortega era un miembro laico activo e incluso se desempeñó como presidente de la Federación Juvenil de Dallas, pero no planeaba dedicarse al ministerio a tiempo completo. Siempre había querido ser arquitecto. En un viaje misionero a México, sentado en la audiencia escuchando a un amigo presentar el mensaje, pensó: «Hombre, me gustaría hacer eso algún día, pero nunca me atrevería porque, ya sabes, ese no soy yo». Trabajaría como diseñador de arquitectura durante siete años.
Al año siguiente, el director del viaje misionero le pidió que hablara. «¿Cómo iba a pensar en mí?», se preguntó. Pero siguió adelante con fe. «Cuando reflexiono, ese fue probablemente uno de los peores sermones que la gente haya escuchado. Pero cuando hice el llamado al final de la semana, 11 personas se pusieron de pie. Cuando vi eso, me dije: “Guau. Señor, sé que no fui yo”. Vi que era el Espíritu Santo obrando y, a partir de es momento, con la combinación de mi pasión por servir a la iglesia, sentí que Dios me estaba diciendo: “Tengo algo más para ti”».
Poco después, obtuvo su título en teología y sirvió como pastor durante ocho años en Oklahoma y tres años en Indiana, dos años de los cuales también fue director. Regresó a Oklahoma después para servir como director de jóvenes y director de comunicación antes de mudarse a Oregon para servir como director del ministerio de familias y niños.
Ahora, Ortega está entusiasmado de unirse a Southern California Conference como director del ministerio juvenil. Su ministerio se basa en tres cosas: guiar a los jóvenes a Cristo, discipularlos para que sean como Cristo y empoderarlos para servir a Cristo. Espera colaborar con los líderes de iglesia para proporcionar una programación significativa para los jóvenes a lo largo de la conferencia.
Su filosofía personal se centra en la búsqueda del Espíritu Santo. «Creo que es imperativo que como conferencia, como líderes de iglesia y como padres, oremos continuamente por el Espíritu Santo esté sobre nuestros hijos y nuestros jóvenes», dijo. «Puedo hacer el programa más asombroso del mundo, pero si el Espíritu Santo no está allí, ¿fue realmente un gran programa?»
«Pienso en las personas en mi vida cuando era joven que fueron una bendición para mí y que fueron pacientes conmigo, que me amaron, y solo quiero corresponder a eso», reflexionó. «Quiero ser capaz de encontrar oportunidades para servirles, animarles e inspirarles».
