Shelle Blake, Thunderbird Christian Elementary (TCE) treasurer, was not expecting the sight that met her eyes when she opened the front office door just a few weeks before school started in August 2024. Standing water throughout the office and gushing water from under the sink in the office kitchenette shocked her and Principal Chandra Young. The water flowed throughout the main office and under the walls into the adjoining classrooms for grades 3 to 8.
The school community quickly rallied together to address the immediate challenges, relocating students to temporary learning spaces in the Sabbath School wing of the Scottsdale-Thunderbird church and organizing clean-up efforts. Thanks to the support of parents, local churches, and community partners, a complete remodel was finished in time for students to renter their classrooms at the start of the second semester.
The remodel not only included a new office layout and new cabinetry throughout the office and classrooms but also allowed for the completion of the STEM lab, which was already being designed before the flood. In the former school library, students now have a dedicated space to participate in STEM labs focused on nursing, dentistry, culinary arts, video production, computer graphics and game development, robotics, and digital manufacturing.
As Thunderbird Christian Elementary moves forward, this project is a testament to resilience, innovation, and a commitment to providing students with the best possible education. Through faith and determination, TCE is turning adversity into an opportunity for growth and excellence.

Escuela remodela y mejora el laboratorio de STEM tras inundaciones
Shelle Blake, tesorera de Thunderbird Christian Elementary (TCE), no esperaba lo que vio cuando abrió la puerta de la oficina solo unas semanas antes de que comenzaran las clases en agosto de 2024. El agua estancada en toda la oficina y el agua que brotaba por debajo del fregadero de la cocina la sorprendieron a ella y a la directora Chandra Young. El agua fluía a través de la oficina y debajo de las paredes hacia las aulas contiguas para los grados 3º a 8º.
La comunidad escolar se unió rápidamente para enfrentar los desafíos inmediatos, reubicando a los estudiantes en espacios de aprendizaje temporales en el ala de la Escuela Sabática de la iglesia Scottsdale-Thunderbird y organizaron esfuerzos de limpieza. Gracias al apoyo de los padres, las iglesias y los socios comunitarios, se terminó una remodelación completa a tiempo para que los estudiantes regresaran a sus aulas al comienzo del segundo semestre.
La remodelación no solo incluyó un nuevo diseño de oficina y nuevos gabinetes en toda la oficina y las aulas, sino que también permitió la finalización del laboratorio STEM, que ya se estaba diseñando antes de la inundación. En la antigua biblioteca de la escuela, los estudiantes ahora tienen un espacio para participar en laboratorios STEM enfocados en enfermería, odontología, artes culinarias, producción de video, gráficos por computadora y desarrollo de juegos, robótica y producción digital.
A medida que Thunderbird Christian Elementary avanza, ese proyecto es un testimonio de resiliencia, innovación y compromiso de brindar a los estudiantes la mejor educación posible.
